Woodrow Wilson character jug produced by Allertons of Longton, England, circa 1915. Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) was the 28th president of the United States, serving from 1913 to 1921. He was the only Democrat to serve as president during the Progressive Era when Republicans dominated the presidency and legislative branches. As president, Wilson changed the nation's economic policies and led the United States into World War I. He was the leading architect of the League of Nations, and his stance on foreign policy came to be known as Wilsonianism. Scholars have generally ranked Wilson in the upper tier of U.S. presidents, although he has been criticized for supporting racial segregation. Finished in its popular gilded flow blue style the satirical Woodrow Wilson character jug was issued at the height of Wilson's political career and depicted him with a wide-eyed open mouth expression of bewilderment. There is also a small version of this character jug standing 2 1/2" tall.
