William Clark character jug prototype designed by Caroline Dadd and modeled by Alan Maslankowski, and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 2005. William Clark (1770-1838) was the co-leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, one of the most thrilling stories in the history of the American nation. He was chosen by his friend, Meriwether Lewis, to share leadership of the Voyage of Discovery across the North American continent in search of a water route to the Pacific Ocean. Leaving St. Louis in May, 1804, the expedition reached the Pacific Ocean eighteen months later and returned in September, 1806, to much acclaim, because they had been given up for lost. The 8,000 mile round-trip over often harrowing terrain is considered America's greatest exploration feat. Clark's observations of nature enlarged the findings of the expedition; his journals and maps recorded its history. Upon his return, he was appointed superintendent of Indian affairs, and from 1813 to 1821 he was governor of the Missouri Territory. Old Toby Indian guide forms the handle of this jug.
