W. G. Grace character jug modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1996 limited edition of 9,500. Considered the world's greatest cricketer, William Gilbert Grace (1848-1915) was born near Bristol, England. His parents adored cricket and encouraged their sons to play well. Just before his sixteenth birthday, William was picked for the Gentlemen against the Players at the Oval and Lords. It would be the beginning of a remarkable career spanning forty-three years in first-class cricket during which time he achieved 54,896 runs, 2,876 wickets and 870 catches. Indeed, his batting completely altered the standard of scoring, as before his day a score of fifty was noteworthy and a century extremely rare. "W. G.," as the public knew him, was one of the best-known men in England, but this gentle giant never boasted about his prowess. Seven years after his death, the Morylebore Cricket Club erected the Grace Gates at Lord's Cricket Ground as a permanent tribute to this remarkable sportsman. A cricket bat and ball form the handle of the jug. A small version (D6845) of this W. G. Grace character jug was also produced.
