Trappist Monk toby jug - Europe circa 1975

Trappist Monk produced in Europe circa 1975. The Trappists, officially known as the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance and originally named the Order of Reformed Cistercians of Our Lady of La Trappe, are a Catholic religious order of cloistered monastics that branched off from the Cistercians. They follow the Rule of Saint Benedict and have communities of both monks and nuns that are known as Trappists and Trappistines, respectively. They are named after La Trappe Abbey, the monastery from which the movement and religious order originated. Ketje is a Brussels word for child or boy, more specifically a street boy. "Brussels ketje" is a nickname for a true Brussels resident, someone who was born and raised in Brussels and speaks the Brussels dialect. Ketje is also a brown ale produced by Stella Artois, which this jug is an advertising piece for. It is also the name of a famous Brussel's pub. A stalk of wheat forms the handle of the jug.
