The Sailor character jug modeled by William K. Harper and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1991 limited edition of 250 commissioned by "The British Toby". This jug, together with the Airman and the Soldier, pays tribute to the conscripted men who served in various branches of the British armed forces during World War II. The Royal Navy is the oldest of the British armed services, and therefore is referred to as the Senior Service. From the late seventeenth century to halfway through World War II, it was the largest and most powerful navy in the world, helping to establish the British Empire as the dominant power of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was also most active in mapping the world by recording every coastline it encountered. Royal Navy vessels on surveying missions also carried out extensive scientific work. During the two World Wars, the Navy played a vital role in keeping the United Kingdom supplied with food, arms and raw materials and in defeating the German campaigns of submarine warfare. After World War II and during the Cold War, it was transformed into an anti-Soviet force. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, its role for the twenty-first century has returned to global operations. A pair of RCN binoculars forms the handle of the jug. The On Guard for Thee Canadian Set is a colorway of the Comrades in Arms Set with a special backstamp, commemorating the Canadian Armed Forces who fought alongside their British compatriots.
