The Captain toby jug - Thorley China circa 1955

The Captain toby jug produced by Thorley China of Longton, England, circa 1955. Captain is a title for the commanding officer of a military unit; the supreme leader of a navy ship, merchant ship, airplane, spacecraft, or other vessel; or the commander of a port, fire or police department, election precinct, etc. In militaries, the captain is typically at the level of an officer commanding a company or battalion of infantry, a ship, or a battery of artillery, or another distinct unit. The term also may be used as an informal or honorary title for persons in similar commanding roles. This Captain is designed in the likeness of Winston Churchill. Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Sir Winston Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) was a British statesman, soldier, and writer who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. A rampant lion forms the handle of the jug.
