Squire thimble produced by Wood Potters of Burslem of Burslem, England, in 1992. In the Middle Ages, a squire was the shield- or armor-bearer of a knight. Use of the term evolved over time. Initially, a squire served as a knight's apprentice. Later, a village leader or a lord of the manor might come to be known as a "squire", and still later, the term was applied to members of the landed gentry. The Squire is seated in a chair holding his churchwarden pipe in his left hand and holding a mug of ale in his right hand. This is the thimble version of that toby jug. The plaque on the rear of the thimble has the artist's initials and year of production.
