Smoker Smiling majolica character jug wearing a red hat and produced in Austria circa 1925. One of the many Brownie characters created by Palmer Cox, the Smoker has a happy smile on his face. Today has been a good day and he is quite pleased with how things have gone. Hopefully the days ahead go just as well for him. Palmer Cox created a merry band of Brownies who travelled by night to have fun and do good deeds. The first Brownies story, "The Brownies' Ride", appeared in the February 1883 issue of "St. Nicholas". Palmer wrote 25 books before his death in 1924. The Brownies appeared in ads or packaging for everything from "sick stomach" remedies to the Kodak Brownie camera.
