Simon the Cellarer character jug produced in Australia circa 1940. Published in 1860, Simon the Cellarer was composed by John Liptrot Hatton (1809-1886) and its lyrics written by W. H. Bellamy. This fine Victorian song tells the humorous story of a middle-aged couple, both very much attached to their tipple, whereby the wily cellarer evades the amorous advances made by one Dame Margery who, in her old age, seeks to enter the state of matrimony. A cellarer is the person in charge of provisions. Simon keeps the food and drink in a locked cellar with the keys to the cellar forming the handle of the jug. Healesville is incised on the side of Simon's hat.
