Shaman character jug - Mexico circa 1999

Shaman toby jug produced in Mexico circa 1999. A shaman has access to, and influence in, the world of good and evil spirits, especially among some peoples of northern Asia and North America. Typically such people enter a trance state during a ritual, and practice divination and healing. Shamanism is a religious practice that involves a shaman interacting with the spirit world through altered states of consciousness, such as trance. The goal of this is usually to direct spirits or spiritual energies into the physical world for the purpose of healing, divination, or to aid human beings in some other way. The shaman's totem forms the handle of the jug.
