Samuel Johnson medium character jug in a white colorway produced by Ashtead Potteries of Surrey, England, in a 1926 limited edition. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), often called Dr. Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, critic, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography calls him "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". This is an advertising jug with "Barclay's Ales Stout and Lager" on the right side of Johnson's head.
