Sailor majolica humidor produced in Austria circa 1930. One of the many Brownie characters created by Palmer Cox, a sailor, seaman, mariner, or seafarer is a person who works aboard a watercraft as part of its crew and may work in any one of a number of different fields that are related to the operation and maintenance of a ship. This sailor has traveled the world and has many tales to tell. Palmer Cox created a merry band of Brownies who travelled by night to have fun and do good deeds. The first Brownies story, "The Brownies' Ride", appeared in the February 1883 issue of "St. Nicholas". Palmer wrote 25 books before his death in 1924. The Brownies appeared in ads or packaging for everything from "sick stomach" remedies to the Kodak Brownie camera.
