Ronald Reagan character jug modeled by Eric Griffiths and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1984 limited edition of 5,000 commissioned by the Republican National Committee. Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) was the fortieth President of the United States. Beginning as an Iowa radio sports announcer, he moved to Hollywood to become an actor, making his film debut in "Love is on the Air" in 1937. He starred in more than fifty films during his Hollywood career, most famously as George Gipp in "Knute Rockne All-American" (1940), for which he was nicknamed the “Gipper” throughout his life. He gained a taste for politics as the President of the Hollywood Screen Actors Guild. Although originally a Democrat, Reagan became increasingly anti-Communist and in 1962 joined the Republican Party. In 1966 he was elected governor of the predominantly Democratic state of California. He stood for the Republican presidential nomination twice before his successful campaign in 1980. A charismatic leader, his speeches were so expertly delivered and persuasive that he was dubbed the “Great Communicator.” Reagan served two terms, the only U.S. President to survive an assassin’s bullet while in office. His supply-side economics resulted in reduced inflation and a robust economic expansion. He is credited with a leading role in bringing about the end of the Cold War, principally as a result of his “Star Wars” Strategic Defense Initiative and his several negotiating meetings with Russian Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev. A US flag forms the handle of the jug. A brown jacket colorway is known to exist.
