Ringo Starr character jug designed by Lorna Bailey and produced by Old Ellgreave Pottery of Burslem, England, circa 2005. Ringo Starr, born Richard Starkey (1940- ), is a popular British musician, best known as the drummer for the Beatles. Ringo is known for his reliable, steady drumming and innovative fills. In 1957 he started his own group, then in 1959 he joined The Raving Texans. During this time, he got the nickname, Ringo, because of the rings he wore; so that his drum solos could be billed as Starr Time he took Starr as his last name. When the Beatles removed Pete Best as their drummer, Starr was their choice to replace him. His distinctive drumming style, a tendency to lead with his left hand while playing a right-handed kit, went on to establish a new approach to rhythm in popular music. Starr's easy-going personality played a major role in the Beatles' success, contributing greatly in areas where the others were weak, such as public relations and acting. Of the four, Starr is the only competent actor and has been cast in the lead roles in their feature films. After the Beatles went their separate ways, Starr had moderate success both as a solo artist and in acting. Dressed in his Sgt. Pepper uniform, one of Ringo's drums forms the handle of the jug.
