Pufferfish toby jug - Old Ellgreave Pottery circa 2000

Pufferfish toby jug designed by Lorna Bailey and produced by Old Ellgreave Pottery of Burslem, England, circa 2000. Tetraodontidae is a family of primarily marine and estuarine fish that includes many familiar species variously called pufferfish, puffers, balloon fish, blowfish, blowers, and blowies. The majority of pufferfish species are toxic and some are among the most poisonous vertebrates in the world. In certain species, the internal organs contain tetrodotoxin and are highly toxic to most animals when eaten; nevertheless, the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in Japan. The pufferfish's fins form the handle of the jug.
