Pickwick character jug - Siltone Pottery circa 1990

Pickwick character jug produced by Siltone Pottery of Staffordshire, England, circa 1990. The adventures of Mr. Samuel Pickwick and the other members of the Corresponding Society of the Pickwick Club form the plot of Charles Dickens's novel "The Pickwick Papers". A bald-headed and bespectacled man, the eloquent Pickwick is General Chairman of the club he founded. A Corresponding Society is formed to report to the Club the adventures and journeys of the Society members and observations of character and manners. The kind-hearted, unworldly Pickwick gets into a number of scrapes, including being sent to court in a breach of promise suit brought by Mrs. Bardell, resulting in a spell in Fleet Prison. This experience dampens the spirit and usual good humor of Mr. Pickwick, but once released he lives contentedly, following learned pursuits.
