Pecksniff character jug - Siltone Pottery circa 1990

Pecksniff character jug produced by Siltone Pottery of Staffordshire, England, circa 1990. Seth Pecksniff is an unctuous English architect whose insincere behavior made the name Pecksniff synonymous with hypocrisy. He appears in the novel Martin Chuzzlewit (1843-44) by Charles Dickens. A widower with two daughters, Pecksniff is a self-styled teacher of architecture. He believes that he is a highly moral individual who loves his fellowman but mistreats his students and passes off their designs as his own for profit. He seems to be a cousin of Old Martin Chuzzlewit. Pecksniff's rise and fall follows the novel's plot arc.
