Ordinary Toby jug stoneware version 2 - Martin Brothers 1903

Ordinary Toby version 2 salt glazed stoneware jug produced by Martin Brothers of London, England, in 1903. This is Robert Wallace Martin's interpretation of the original Ordinary Toby from the 1770s. This bearded Toby is dressed in a long jacket glazed in colored slips in green, pale blue and browns, beneath the glaze. Seated in a high-backed chair he is holding a pipe in right hand and mug in left. The bottom has the typical Martin Brothers incised mark and the date 1903. This is a very rare jug.
