Ordinary Toby jug - Prattware Staffordshire circa 1790

Ordinary Toby jug in Prattware finish produced in Staffordshire England circa 1790. This Ordinary Toby is unusual and rare because he is holding a monkey that is playing a horn. The Ordinary Toby is the original toby jug featuring a seated common man of the time wearing 18th century clothing and a tricorn hat. He typically holds a jug of his favorite ale in his left hand resting it on his knee and often has a churchwarden pipe propped alongside his right leg. The Prattware finish is underglaze metallic oxides that have distinctive bright colors of yellows blues and browns typically associated with William Pratt of Fenton.
