Ordinary Toby jug in Pearlware finish produced in Staffordshire circa 1790. The Ordinary Toby is the original toby jug featuring a seated common man of the time wearing 18th century clothing and a tricorn hat. He typically holds a jug of his favorite ale in his left hand resting it on his knee and often has a churchwarden pipe propped alongside his right leg. There is a removeable cap that fits into the top of Toby's hat. The Pearlware finish refers to the final clear glazing that contained cobalt and gave a slight blue coloring to glaze that tended to pool between fingers and in the creases in the face.
