Nurse character jug designed by Carolyn Dadd and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, as the 2008 Royal Doulton International Collectors Club issue. This Nurse is a member of the Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service (QARNNS) from World War II. Responding to needed improvements in medical care in 1884, a uniformed Naval Nursing Service was created. In 1902 Alexandra of Denmark, the queen consort of Edward VII, became President of the Nursing Staff and it is in her honor the Naval Nursing Service was renamed. In 1910 QARNNS Reserve was established with civilian hospitals supplying nurses in the event of war. With the outbreak of World War I, QARNNS was significantly expanded and during World War II many volunteer QARNNS nurses were deployed overseas. QARNNS officially became part of the Royal Navy in March, 2000. This nurse wears the QUARRNS World War II uniform. The handle features her distinguishing waistband and the QUARRNS insignia.
