Night Watchman character jug - S. & F. Pottery circa 1965

Night Watchman character jug produced by S. & F. Pottery of Cheadle, England, circa 1965. The dependable night watchman, with his luminous lantern in tow, served the Williamsburg community by keeping a vigilant watch throughout the night. He made his rounds of various streets and alleys, checking doors and investigating any noises that were out of place. His job was to assure that all was well and secure so that the townsfolk could sleep in peace. In a time before mass production of clocks, he would call out the hours and the weather: "Twelve o'clock and all is well!" He also might be entrusted with lighting and extinguishing the street lamps of the town each evening and morning. A lantern forms the handle of the jug.
