Napoleon Bonaparte character jug produced by Wood & Sons of Burslem, England, circa 1980. Born in Corsica, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) rose through the ranks of the army to become Emperor of France. He conquered and created an empire that covered most of western and central Europe, from Spain to the fringes of Russia, and from Norway to Italy. His armies crushed one foe after another until he seemed invincible. But upon reaching Moscow in 1812 and finding it abandoned, he was forced to retreat due to brutal winter conditions, losing over 500,000 men. Forced to abdicate, he was banished to Elba in 1814, only to return and retake command a year later. One hundred days later he suffered a crushing defeat by the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo in Belgium. Captured trying to escape to the United States, he was exiled to the barren island of St. Helena, off the west coast of Africa, where he died of cancer.
