Mr. Varden character jug - Beswick circa 1950

Mr. Varden character jug designed by Arthur Gredington and produced by Beswick of Longton, England, circa 1950. Gabriel Varden is a fictional character in the novel "Barnaby Rudge" (1841) by Charles Dickens. Gabriel Varden is married to Martha Varden and they have a daughter Dolly. Gabriel is a locksmith. During the riots, he's captured by rioters who want him to help them break into Newgate Prison. A key to the prison forms the handle of the jug. This jug is a pair with the Mrs. Varden sugar bowl.
