Mr. Pickwick & Mr. Buz Fuz thimbles produced by Francesca China of Longton, England, circa 1985. The adventures of Mr. Samuel Pickwick and the other members of the Corresponding Society of the Pickwick Club form the plot of Charles Dickens' novel "The Pickwick Papers". A bald-headed and bespectacled man, the eloquent Pickwick is General Chairman of the club he founded. A Corresponding Society is formed to report to the Club the adventures and journeys of the Society members and observations of character and manners. The kind-hearted, unworldly Pickwick gets into a number of scrapes, including being sent to court in a breach of promise suit brought by Mrs. Bardell, resulting in a spell in Fleet Prison. Sergeant Buz Fuz is the bullying grandiloquent barrister in Charles Dickens' "Pickwick Papers", published 1836-37. The widow Mrs. Bardell, completely misinterpreting Mr. Pickwick's innocent intentions, sues him for breach of promise. Buz Fuz acts as her counsel and secures judgment in her favor with damages of 750 pounds. He is described as "cozening or browbeating intelligent juries as occasion serves; the legalized champion of broken-hearted widows; adored of solicitors and constant recipient of highly marked briefs."
