Monuke face pot in a black and gold colorway produced by Kevin Francis Ceramics of Stoke-on-Trent, England, in a 2002 Guild issue for Save the Manatee, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of manatees. Manatees are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivorous marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows. They measure up to 13 feet long and weigh as much as 1,300 pounds. Manatees inhabit the shallow, marshy coastal areas and rivers of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Amazon basin, and West Africa. The main causes of death for manatees are human-related issues, such as habitat destruction and human objects. Their slow-moving, curious nature has led to violent collisions with propeller-driven boats and ships. Monuke's face pot quote, "Row, Row, Row your boat ...", comes from the nursery rhyme of the same name and urges everyone to boat safely and slowly.
