Miller's Wife character jug produced by Thorley China of Longton, England, circa 1955. Wife to the miller in "There Was a Jolly Miller Once", an English children's rhyme originally part of the Love in a Village by of Isaac Bickerstaffe in 1762. The miller owned the mill on the River Dee at Chester and lived happily there with his wife. He was supposed to have been envied by King Henry VIII himself due to the miller's great wealth. The sad end to the story is that the mill was burned down in 1895 just a year after the death of the last of the miller's descendant. This is a pair with the tiny Jolly Miller character jug.
