Milkmaid toby jug - Germany circa 1910

Milkmaid toby jug produced in Germany circa 1910 and marked Ges Gesch. A milkmaid, milk maid, milkwoman, dairymaid, or dairywoman is a girl or woman who milks cows. She also uses the milk to prepare dairy products such as cream, butter, and cheese. In the past, many large houses and estates employed milkmaids instead of having other staff do the work. The mark Ges Gesch is short for "Gesetzlich geschuzt" meaning registered in German. Ware marked in this way is commonly referred to as Ges Gesch ware.
