Medusa character jug prototype modeled by Robert I. Tabbenor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 2007. One of the Gorgon sisters and daughter of Phorkys and Keto, Medusa was a fair-haired priestess of Athena who had devoted herself to a life of celibacy for her goddess. However, she was wooed by the god Poseidon, falling in love with him and forsaking her vows. For this offense, Medusa was punished severely by Athena who turned her beautiful hair into snakes, eyes into bloodshot orbs, and alabaster skin a greenish hue. Athena further cursed Medusa so that anyone looking into her eyes would immediately be turned to stone, thus assuring Medusa a long, lonely life as an outcast. Beheaded by the hero Perseus, he returned Medusa's head to Athena for the goddess to place on her shield. This prototype character jug was commissioned by G & G Collectables and intended to be a part of the Myths and Legends Series. A helmet, sword, shield and snake form the handle of this jug.
