Marianne majolica character jug produced by Onnaing of France circa 1905, model number 763. Marianne is the national symbol of the French Republic, an allegory of liberty and reason. Depicted as a young woman wearing a Phrygian or liberty cap, the blue, white and red coloring of the jug represent the colors of the French flag. The red and blue colors of Marianne's dress and cap are rarely found in a reversed colorway. Photo of reversed colorway courtesy of Nicolas Tassin.
