Maria das Batallas toby jug produced by Sargadelos of Sargadelos, Spain in a 2020 limited edition of 1,000. Mayor Fernandez de la Camara y Pita, popularly known as María Pita, is the unquestionable main figure of Corunna's history. A demanding and resolute woman, she got married and widowed four times. In 1589, Sir Francis Drake, corsair of the British Navy, besieged A Coruña as a punishment for the support given to the Spanish Armada sent by the Spanish King against England a year earlier.
After long days of fierce fighting and intense fire, the population took refuge resistance behind the walls of the Old City. With women and children helping as much as men, everything useful was used to close holes in the walls. But tragically the enemy opened a large gap. Faced with fatigue and a large number of dead and injured, the city seemed ready to succumb. Then Maria Pita, moving forward with a pike, knocked down and killed the English second lieutenant and snatched away his flag. In view of this heroism, the downhearted spirits of the people of Corunna are transformed, throwing themselves enraged on the enemies who hurriedly retreated. Maria's left hand and arm holding a flag form the handle of the jug.
