King George VI character jug large size modelled by Billy Grindy and produced by Grimwades of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1940 with is Royal Winton tradename. George VI, Albert Frederick Arthur George, (1895-1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from December 11, 1936 until his death in 1952. He was also the last Emperor of India from 1936 until the British Raj was dissolved in August 1947, and the first Head of the Commonwealth following the London Declaration of 1949. He became king at a point when public faith in the monarchy was at a low ebb. During his reign, his people endured the hardships of war, and imperial power was eroded. However, as a dutiful family man and by showing personal courage, he succeeded in restoring the popularity of the monarchy. A braided sash forms the handle of the jug. The King George VI character jug is known in four sizes with this being the largest. The other sizes stand 4 3/4", 3 3/4", and 2 1/2" tall.
