John Lennon character jug colorway with a red jacket modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1987 special edition of 1,000 for John Sinclair of Sheffield. The Beatles, probably the world's most famous rock and roll group, formed in Liverpool, England in the early 1960s, signing their first record contract with EMI in 1962. John Lennon (1940 - 1980) played the rhythm guitar and was one of the group's lead singers, along with George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Lennon and McCartney were responsible for many of the melodies and lyrics that quickly caught on and created a wave of hysteria called Beatlemania. The group's creativity and versatility kept them at the top of the world's music scene for many years. The group split up in 1971 to follow their own individual careers, but the tracks they recorded together have taken on a timeless quality for the world to enjoy for generations to come. Lennon also had great success as a solo artist.
