Joe Mercer character jug created by Ted Elkins and produced by Melwood Potteries of England circa 1975. An outstanding licensee and stalwart charity worker, Joe Mercer served as the Chairman of the Licensed Victualler's National Home charity in 1966. The Licensed Trade Charity was founded in England in 1793 by people from the trade and is devoted to looking after people from the licensed drinks trade, providing support when needed. It helps over 10,000 people each year and is proud to have helped hundreds of thousands of people over the past 200 plus years. In the early 1800s the charity began a project to house people from the trade who had fallen on hard times and began the Licensed Victuallers' National Homes. Those homes were later sold, and the charity currently retains a partner relationship with Anchor Housing allowing it to nominate people from the trade so that they are pushed up the queue and often housed very quickly.
