Joan of Arc character jug - Longchamp circa 1912

Joan of Arc majolica character jug by Longchamp circa 1912. Joan of Arc (1412-1431), also known as Jeanne D'Arc, was a French heroine who at the age of eighteen led the French army to victory over the English at Orleans in 1430. Joan has holy visions instructing her to support Charles VII in recovering France from English domination. She was captured by the English a year after the victory at Orleans, tried, and burned at the stake as a heretic. She was canonized as a Saint on May 16 1920. This Joan of Arc character jug was redesign as a bank. Photo of Longchamp catalogue page courtesy of Maryse Bottero.
