Janus loving cup - Minton circa 1865

Janus two-handled majolica loving cup produced by Minton circa 1865. Janus is the Roman god of beginnings, transitions, time, passages and endings. As a god of beginnings and endings the doors of Janus' temples were open during times of war and closed during peace. This jug is modeled after a 5th century Greek terra-cotta drinking cup. Janus is shown with an older face looking toward the past while his younger face looks toward the future. This very rare loving cup was only produced from the late 1860s into the early 1870s.
