Jabez toby jug produced by Wood & Sons of Burslem, England, circa 1985. Jabez is a boy's name of Hebrew origin that means sorrowful or born in pain.
This biblical name refers to a passage in the Hebrew Bible about a mother's relief of finally holding her baby in her arms after a difficult birth. He is holding a cup of ale in his left hand. Note the H J Wood name impressed in the base of the jug. This mold was passed on from H J Wood to Wood & Sons.
