Huntsman toby jug blue/white - Germany circa 1910

Huntsman 3/4 body toby jug in a blue and white colorway produced in Germany circa 1910 and marked Ges Gesch. Traditionally in England, the Huntsman was the person whose responsibility it was to manage an organized hunt, such as a foxhunt, and possibly look after the hounds as well. He loved the gallop, knows his pack by name and smacks his top boots with his crop to emphasize his charge. Soon, anyone participating on a hunt became referred to as a huntsman. Today the name simply refers to one who hunts or who practices hunting. After generations of English huntsman, fox hunting has recently been outlawed in the United Kingdom.
The mark Ges Gesch is short for "Gesetzlich geschuzt" meaning registered in German. Ware marked in this way is commonly referred to as Ges Gesch ware.
