Horatio Nelson face pot - Kevin Francis circa 2002

Horatio Nelson face pot produced by Kevin Francis Ceramics of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 2002. Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was a British flag officer in the Royal Navy. His inspirational leadership and grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics brought about a number of decisive British naval victories during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest naval commanders in history. Nelson's face pot quote, "I really do not see the signal", is a quote referring to an 1801 incident during battle. The cautious Admiral Sir Hyde Parker sent a signal to Nelson's forces ordering them to discontinue the action which was transmitted via a system of signal flags. When this order was brought to the more aggressive Nelson's attention, he lifted his telescope up to his blind eye, saying, "I have a right to be blind sometimes. I really do not see the signal," and most of his forces continued to press home the attack.
