Highland Piper character jug - Audley Porcelain circa 1980

Highland Piper character jug modeled by Diana Capener and produced by Audley Porcelain of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1980. Pipers traditionally led the Scottish regiments into battle, the bagpipes rousing their spirits and scaring the enemy. Bagpipes were first brought to Scotland from England in the early fifteenth century. They have become Scotland's national instrument. However, this is not strictly a model of a Gordon Piper. The red tunic and imposing headdress are that of a Gordon drummer, as opposed to the bottle green tunic and Glengarry cap worn by the piper. The Tiger lapel and sash badges on this Piper identify him as a Gordon Highlander. Bagpipes form the handle of the jug.
