Gnome toby jug produced by Schafer & Vater of Rudolstadt, Germany, circa 1925. A gnome is a mythological creature and diminutive spirit in Renaissance magic and alchemy, first introduced by Paracelsus in the 16th century and later adopted by authors including those of modern fantasy literature. Typically, small humanoids who live underground, their characteristics are reinterpreted to suit various storytellers and artists. This gnome is riding on the back of a pig to travel the countryside. Although the gnome has a firm grip on the pig's ears, the pig looks quite happy about the adventure. The tail of the gnome's hat forms the handle of the jug.
