Gnome Good Health toby jug produced by DNW Ceramics of England circa 2000 using the Fielding's Crown Devon tradename and an imitation backstamp. The Burton Ware tradename is also incised on the bottom. A gnome is a mythological creature and diminutive spirit in Renaissance magic and alchemy, first introduced by Paracelsus in the 16th century and later adopted by authors including those of modern fantasy literature. Typically, small humanoids who live underground, their characteristics are reinterpreted to suit various storytellers and artists. The tail of his hat forms the handle of the jug.
