George Whitfield faience toby jug produced by Desvres circa 1900. George Whitfield (1714-1770) was an Anglican cleric and evangelist who was one of the founders of Methodism and the evangelical movement. Clutching his hat to his chest with his left hand the lantern he is holding in his right hand is symbolic of his lifelong dedication to proclaiming the Light of the World. Modeled after the Staffordshire design of a century earlier he is unmarked.
