Garde Champetre toby jug - Fives-Lille circa 1910

Garde Champetre majolica toby jug produced by Fives-Lille circa 1910. The Garde Champetre or rural policeman was appointed by the mayor of a village to catch poachers and stop thieves. He also served as the town crier. This particular policeman has fallen asleep on the job with his head resting on his walking stick. He is seated on a tree stump with a tree branch forming the handle of the jug. This is a rare jug. Three different slogans can be found on the policeman's left arm patch. They are "Garde Champetre" "Garde Chasse" or "Je Suis La Loi" for "I am the law."
