French Zouaves toby jug - Orchies circa 1910

French Zouaves majolica toby jug produced by Orchies of Orchies, France, circa 1910. This pitcher commemorates the French soldiers who served in the Battalions of Light Infantry of Africa, also known as the Zouaves. Know for their distinctive uniform, these units came into existence in 1830 and served until 1962. A walking stick forms the handle of this jug. Orchies model numbers are a combination of letters and numbers. The letters are an abbreviation for the name of the jug and the number is the size of the jug. This jug is incised with the designer's name, Foubert, near the base on his right side.
