Flower Seller toby jug - Franklin Porcelain 1980

Flower Seller toby jug designed by Peter Jackson and produced by Franklin Porcelain of London, England, in 1980 limited edition and sold on a subscription basis. A flower seller, normally a woman, traditionally sells flowers on the street. Often the flowers are carried in a basket. Quite common in Victorian London, the profession has slowly died out. The subject matter has been a favorite of artists. She is carrying a basket of freshly cut flowers in her right arm. Very common in Victorian London, street vendors sold merchandise or services that were easily transported; the term is synonymous with costermonger or peddler. Street vendors often advertised by loud street cries or chants, and bantered with customers, to attract attention and enhance sales. This Flower Seller cries out, "Flowers! Penny a bunch!" This is one of twelve toby jugs in the Cries of London Series.
