Fat Boy character jug - Thorley China circa 1955

Fat Boy character jug produced by Thorley China of Longton, England, circa 1955 under its Thorley Ware tradename. Joe, or the Fat Boy, is one of the inimitable characters depicted in the 1837 novel, "The Pickwick Papers", by Charles Dickens. The servant of Mr. Wardle, his rotund form is no doubt due to his gargantuan appetite and somnolence. He falls asleep at every opportunity despite the calls of jolly old Wardle. Eatables and drinkables are all that will raise the Fat Boy from his slumber. His smile and downward gaze portrayed herein are undoubtedly due to his anticipation of a large helping of rook pie.
