Farmer John character jug modeled by Charles J. Noke and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1938-1960. Farmer John portrays the traditional farmer of English folk songs, nursery rhymes and country lore. A countryman's day is long and hard, but it is clear that Farmer John works his land with spirit and good cheer. He may grumble over the weather, which is never what he wants, but he usually manages to eat and drink well. Perhaps here, his bumper crop sold at market, he is celebrating at the local hostelry with good friends and neighbors, and a few cool pints of cider. His simple withered face is animated by the success of his harvest, the remaining chores at home forgotten for the moment. Originally modeled with the handle set within the head of the jug as in this example, subsequent models featured the handle attached to the outside. Along with this large size, a small size (D5789) was also produced.
