Esther character jug produced by C. Alan Johnson in the United States in 1959. Esther is a kindly, warm-hearted grandmother. The grandfather clock strikes four and the noise echoes down the paneled hallway. The steady clicking from the parlor ceases as Esther lays down her needles and skein of wool and rises creakily from the old rocking chair; it's teatime. She is dressed in her favorite gown of heavy black calico because today her cherished granddaughters are joining her for tea. The dignified old lady smiles kindly as the children settle on her knee, ready for one of those wise tales that only granny can tell. Today's grannies, much more modern, are still a great favorite with their grandchildren.
