Emile Basly majolica toby jug by Saint-Amand Hamages of France circa 1900. Emile Basly (1854-1928) was one of the great figures of trade unionism in mining in France for which he is primarily known as "the untamable miner" and "the tsar of Lens." In 1900 he became the mayor of Lens and after World War I he spent his remaining years rebuilding the town that had been completely destroyed during the war. Note his name inscribed at the base of the front of the jug.
